Mathew H. is a 20-year-old mechanic who graduated from Legend High School in Parker, CO, in 2021. After he graduated, he accepted an apprenticeship. His first car needed a bit of work, so Mathew put on his gloves and got to it. Then, he decided to become a mechanic.
Why did you choose to become a mechanic?
I was able to get hands-on experience at a young age. Being a mechanic is a fun job. I use my hands, and it does not limit me to sitting at a desk all day.
Was it difficult changing from student to mechanic? How did you make it happen?
It wasn’t, though for others it can be. I was able to accept an apprenticeship with a good company shortly after graduating high school. Others needed to get an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification or go to trade school.
Do you plan on continuing your career as a mechanic, or do you want to do something else?
For the time being, I enjoy being a mechanic. The company I am with actively seeks out people to join the development program to become a manager or take on a corporate role. I was accepted. I may end up going that route, because mechanics is a career that might be difficult as I age. But for the foreseeable future, I will be working on cars.
What are the positives of being a mechanic?
I enjoy the reward of fixing a complex problem with a car. It is also a diverse field with plenty of opportunities to advance and specialize.
What are the negatives?
It is a job that can be very difficult on your body.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into the work field?
I would suggest seeking out an apprenticeship in the field. Work with a very experienced mechanic, rather than seek a certification or trade school. The trade schools offer great programs that teach you in a classroom, but little hands-on experience. This job is one that requires lots of technique and work with your hands, which you can only get better at by actually doing the job, not sitting in a classroom.
